Maui Starting around late October, the Northern Pacific Humpback whales begin their voyage back to the warmer, protected waters around Maui, in the Hawaiian Islands, to breed and give birth to their calfs.
Tonga Tonga is in the southern hemisphere so the whales that travel there are the Southern Pacific Humpback whales, a completely different set of animals from the ones in the northern hemisphere. They still come to Tonga, though, for the same reasons as the whales that travel to Maui - breeding and birthing. Tonga is one of the few places on earth that offers permits to be in the water with humpback whales.
